10/11/2022: Refractory

Fundamental training on refractory materials in metallurgy

This session aims to give a sound overview of different refractories and their particular properties in metallurgical vessels.

Program

  • 08.30: Registration
  • 09.00: What is a refractory?
    • Properties
    • Raw materials
  • 10.00: Bricks and unshaped refractory
    • Different compositions
    • Measuring properties of refractory
  • 11.30: Wear mechanisms
    • Thermal wear
    • Mechanical wear
    • Chemical wear
  • 13.00: Discussion/sandwich lunch

Aim

After the course all participants have a sound overview of different refractory materials and understand the specific properties. Insight in the different wear mechanisms will allow to reason about refractory behaviour and lifetime.

Method

The course will tackle the theory of the topics listed above and several exercises will be made to  ensure that everything was understood.

Who should attend

The course will be given in English and aims at people active in the metal processing industry. The course can be a refreshment of the metallurgical principles for engineers, or give hands-on metallurgists a solid theoretical background.
